THIRTEEN
Cyber Secrets
The rich old biddies from Parkland made such interesting clients (murder; conspiracy; hot, pregnant maids) that I decided to move my office closer to it, at the tip of the Everglades, in a small town called Reston.
Reston, at the time, was known for being a family-oriented community. It was landscaped by Vidarva, the same company that designed the signature look for all the Mutton Mouse amusement parks. Many professional athletes built huge estates in some of the more upscale developments, reserved for the elite of Miami in flight from the crime wave afflicting some of its more affluent areas.
The whole town was extraordinarily tranquil: dads coaching Little League, moms in the PTA, kids in Boy Scouts. It was immaculate—freshly painted mailboxes, neatly trimmed shrubs, and lots and lots of sprinklers. You could set your watch by the sprinklers.
I opened a nice little boutique office in a strip mall, next to a Spanish tapas bar and a nail salon. Before I had a chance to hang up my neon sign, a woman walked into my boutique in a panic. I felt a very warm presence with her—a spirit guiding her.
“Can I help you?” I said.
“I come becows I need to ask you something. I have problem wit my doter. I want to know why did she do dis terribel ting?”
“What terrible thing? Sit down. Please, sit down. And relax,” I added.
The woman burst into tears.
“I don’ speak very good Eenglish. I am from Nicaragua. I came here seven years ago. I came to work to house cleaning. I do house cleaning six days a week. I go to two houses a day. I work bery hard. I have many houses. One lady name is Miss Tiffany Crysp. I bring my doter here last year; finally I haf money to bring her. She is bery beeutiful. I love my doter, and I want a good life for her, here in this country. An’ she come to live wit’ me last year. She does not have a green card. I clean this house an’ my doter baby-sitting for Miss Tiffany.
“One day I go to Miss Tiffany’s house, and she tell me to look on de computadora. She say my doter is on the computadora. She say her husband find it, by accidente. I look at the computadora, and she is there with no clothes on! She is doing dis bad ting! Bery bad! I need you help me!! Please! Por favor! Por el amor de Dios! Please!”
“What was she doing?”
“She…she…she…has at?”
“What site? What is the Internet address, so I can look her up and concentrate on her image?
The woman looked at me blankly.
“Never mind, who told you to look on the computadora?”
“Miss Tiffany Crysp, in Reston.”
“Okay, so where is your daughter now?”
“Home, en la casa. She don’t know I know. I gonna tell her I know, and I gonna send her back to Nicaragua. I no bring her here to do dis! She gotta go back!!”
“I am so sorry to hear this, Miss, uh…?”
“My name ees Gloria.
